I am traveling. Are lounges crowded? As states lifted indoor capacity restrictions, lounges followed suit and customers are streaming back in. Passenger volumes at Alaska, Delta and United clubs are close or equal to pre-Covid numbers, according to those airlines. This is leading in some cases to the return of a prepandemic lounge problem: overcrowding. Jenn Taylor, 58, an executive with the Nexus software company, traveled once a week before the pandemic and found lounges to be “an absolute oasis.” Leaving for a recent business trip from her hometown, Atlanta, she stopped by the Delta Sky Club before her flight. After one look inside, she decided to grab a cookie and wait in the boarding area. “When every seat is full there is no such thing as social distance,” she said of the lounge. What s...

At Delta, the surcharge is one of several new requirements for unvaccinated workers. Starting immediately, those employees will have to wear masks indoors. In about two weeks, they will be subjected to weekly coronavirus tests. Then, on Sept. 30, unvaccinated employees will lose protections intended to cover pay for work missed while having to quarantine. The airline, which is based in Atlanta, its biggest hub, has a lot of employees in a state with a relatively low vaccination rate. Just over half of Georgia’s adult population is fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Delta’s decision not to require the vaccine may also help it to avoid criticism from Georgia’s conservative lawmakers, who have punished it in the past. In 2018, the state legi...

Fundamentally, said Candice Criscione, who shares tips for planning family vacations in Italy on her blog the Tuscan Mom, “this is Italy’s message to Americans and other tourists: Get vaccinated before coming to visit. It’s too complicated and expensive to have to get an official Covid test every time you want to enter a museum or eat at a restaurant, and your vacation options will be extremely limited.”Things have been a bit more complicated for tourists in France, which since July 21 has required a health pass to access public venues, including museums, with more than 50 people. In late July, one Times reader reported that he was turned away from a museum: “They will not accept my paper record,” he wrote.Others have had no issues entering museums with C.D.C. cards. In an email, a spokesw...

Carolina Contreras, a 34-year-old business owner who flies frequently between New York and Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, has been using JetBlue exclusively for her trips for almost a decade without a problem. But on her last two flights, she said her flights were delayed for hours; one was pushed back six times.“I have to be places. I have to rest,” Ms. Contreras, whose salon, Miss Rizos, has locations in both cities, said. “I know how hard the pandemic has been, but people need to get it together.”Ms. Contreras is not alone. Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled by airlines in the last few weeks as travel has picked up, with airlines blaming bad weather and labor shortages for the disruptions.“We’re obviously in a new world, and there are a lot of changes, rules, restr...

Dear Tripped Up,I know that vaccinated Americans are not required to quarantine when visiting France, but are they required to take a Covid test — either going there or returning home? And although I updated my Clear app to show that I have been vaccinated, I don’t know who is responsible for looking at it: Is it the airline when you check in, an officer when you go through security or someone on the ground when you land? BobDear Bob,Once upon a time, the requirements for international travel weren’t all that complicated: always a passport, sometimes a visa.Today, to leave one country and enter another is to contend with confusing rules and restrictions that continue to change as borders reopen and travel resumes.Americans will encounter varying health protocols while traveling abroad. “Aer Lingus tells me they issued the refund and I have to call Orbitz. I got called back from Orbitz four hours after I called,” said Ms. Woolard a retired nurse from Winston-Salem, N.C. “I had to wait another hour to speak to someone. Orbitz said they cannot access my records and that I may not get the refund until the end of 2021,” more than 18 months after the flight was canceled. “I know the airlines are struggling, but you just feel so helpless,” she said. The holdup in the refund, according to Nisreene Atassi, a company spokeswoman, stemmed from a glitch in the Orbitz computer system which rejected the refund because it had been authorized after the one-year expiration period. (After an inquiry by The Times, Ms. Woolard has now received her refund.)To improve its customer service, Exp...

Hotel flexibility will vary, so read the fine printBy now, most of the large American-run chains have reverted to their pre-Covid cancellation policies for reservations made before a certain date (that has come and gone), and for travel through a certain date (that has come and gone). But some companies are still being flexible: Hilton has always had generous cancellation policies, and Four Seasons has been consistently easy about changes and cancellations during the pandemic.Travel-industry insiders also have noticed flexibility among independent hoteliers.“We’ve felt that small, family-run luxury properties are actually more nimble than some of the big hotel chains,” said Louisa Gehring, the owner of Gehring Travel, an affiliate of Brownell, a Virtuoso luxury travel agency. “Rather than ...
